History of the Three Counties Agricultural Society

Three Counties ShowgroundThe Three Counties Agricultural Society began after the formation of the Herefordshire Agricultural society in 1797. It was after a gentlemen called John Clerk of Builth published a book called the ‘General views on agriculture in the county of Hereford’. He observed there was no form of agricultural society in the county of Herefordshire, and that was the beginnings of the Three Counties Agricultural Society as we know it today!

  • The very first show took place on the streets of Hereford in 1798, and three silver goblets were awarded as prizes and the membership was only 100 strong.
  • In 1800  Mr Tench of Broomfield, Ludlow, offered to show a Hereford Bull against any bull in England for one hundred guineas. The Hereford Bull named Prizefighter defeated a Leicester Bull brought by Mr Knowles of Nailsworth and the animal became a celebrity overnight!
  • The first Show to be staged at Malvern was in 1890 and there were no Shows in 1917 and 1918, due to World War 1.
  • Stanley Baldwin MP was elected President in 1924 and plans to stage the Show at Pitchcroft in Worcester were thwarted by inclement weather and eight-foot floods!
  • The first Show after World War II was scheduled on the second Tuesday in June 1947 but was postponed following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease within two miles of the Showyard.
  • In 1958 the showground staged the 1st show and her majesty Queen Elizabeth and The Queen Mother honoured the event with a five-hour visit.

The Three Counties Showground is only 1.5 miles from Orchard Side Malvern Bed and Breakfast in Hanley Swan, which makes this Malvern B&B the perfect place to stay.
